“The device is unreachable” when importing iPhone photos to Windows

This error usually appears partway through an import over USB. A common cause is iPhone converting photos (for example HEIC to JPEG) while Windows copies them; a worn cable or old drivers can also cause it.

Fixes

  1. On the iPhone: Settings › Photos › under “Transfer to Mac or PC”, choose Keep Originals.
  2. Use a different, genuine cable and a USB port on the computer itself.
  3. Unlock the iPhone and tap Trust when asked.
  4. Update Windows (including optional driver updates) and iOS.
  5. Import in smaller batches.

Or skip the cable

Open RoomDisk on the PC as the spare disk, scan its code with the iPhone camera, and send the photos over Wi-Fi. No drivers, no Trust prompt, no conversion mid-copy, and each photo is checked when it lands.

  1. Open roomdisk.com/app on the device that will keep the files and choose Use this device as the spare disk. It shows a QR code.
  2. On the phone or computer with the files, scan that code. A phone’s Camera app works: tap the roomdisk.com link that pops up. RoomDisk opens and shows its own code.
  3. On the spare disk, tap Scan reply and hold the phone’s screen up to its camera. (No camera there? Tap Share reply on the phone and open it on the disk device.)
  4. Both screens say Connected. Choose files and send. Each file is checked when it lands.

Questions

Will the photos be HEIC on Windows?
RoomDisk copies the files iPhone gives it. Pick “Current” under Options in the photo picker for originals (HEIC), or “Most Compatible” for JPEG.
