“Backed up 0 items”: why iPhone photo backups fail, and what to do

When a backup app reports that it backed up 0 items, or that some items couldn’t be backed up, the cause is usually on the iPhone side: the photos aren’t really on the phone, the app can’t see them, or there isn’t room to prepare them.

Common causes on iPhone

  1. Photos are only in iCloud. With Settings › Photos › “Optimize iPhone Storage”, full-size originals live in iCloud and the phone keeps small versions. An app has to download each original first, which fails without internet or space.
  2. The app can see only some photos. In Settings › Privacy & Security › Photos, the app may have “Limited Access”. Allow full access, or select the photos.
  3. Not enough free space on the phone to prepare large videos or converted copies.
  4. The app is out of date after an iOS update.
  5. The screen locked during the backup and the app was paused.

Fixes to try

  • Connect to Wi-Fi and open Photos so iCloud originals can download, or turn on “Download and Keep Originals” if you have room.
  • Give the app full photo access.
  • Free a few GB, keep the screen on, and back up in smaller batches.
  • Update the app and iOS.

A backup you can check

RoomDisk shows exactly what happened to each file: sent, already on the disk, or failed with the reason. Every stored file is fingerprinted on both devices and listed in a receipt, so “done” always means the copy is there and identical.

Questions

Does RoomDisk download photos from iCloud?
It uses the photos iPhone hands to the browser. If originals are only in iCloud, iPhone downloads them when you pick them, which needs internet the first time.
How do I know the backup worked?
The phone says how many files are safe to delete, and each batch has a receipt with every file’s SHA-256 fingerprint.
