RoomDisk vs flash drive vs iCloud
Three ways to keep copies of your photos: a device you already own (RoomDisk), a drive you buy, or a cloud subscription. Each fits a different need.
| RoomDisk | Flash drive | iCloud+ | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free; Pro $14.99 once | Buy the drive | Monthly fee |
| Where files live | A device you own | The drive | Apple’s servers |
| Works with | Any device with a browser | Devices with the right port | Mainly Apple devices |
| Automatic backup | No, you choose what to copy | No | Yes |
| Backs up app data | No | No | Yes |
| Checks each copy | Yes (SHA-256) | No | Handled by the service |
| Needs internet | No (after first visit) | No | Yes |
Which to choose
- iCloud+ if you want automatic, everything-backed-up convenience and don’t mind a monthly fee.
- A flash drive if you want something to carry and your devices have the port.
- RoomDisk if you have a spare device and want to free space, keep proven copies at home and pay nothing (or once).
Many people combine them: iCloud for app data and settings, a spare disk for the big photo and video library.
What each one gets wrong
- Flash drives: owners of phone flash drives often report companion apps that crash or show “backed up 0 items”, drives the phone doesn’t detect, and no check that copies are complete. More on flash drive problems.
- iCloud: 5 GB free fills quickly, prices have risen in several countries, and the cost repeats every month for as long as you keep the photos.
- RoomDisk: needs a second device and both screens on while copying; it isn’t a background backup.
Two copies beat one
Any single device or drive can fail. Whichever you choose, keep important photos in two places: for example the spare disk at home plus iCloud, or two spare disks. RoomDisk can copy the same batch to a second disk in one tap.
Questions
Is a flash drive a backup?
It can hold a copy, but a single drive is one point of failure, and phone flash drives are easy to lose. Check copies before deleting originals.
Can I stop paying for iCloud?
If your photos are safely on devices you own (ideally two) and you don’t need iCloud for app data, you can move to a smaller plan or the free 5 GB.
Which is fastest?
Over a good Wi-Fi network RoomDisk is usually faster than uploading to the cloud; a fast USB 3 drive on a USB 3 port can be faster still.
